Keto Brown Butter Apple Crisp! (Sugar/Grain/Egg Free/ Low Carb!)
So.. I’m actually not sure the carb count on this recipe- at some point I’ll add something that shows nutritional info on here. BUT I do know that green apples are super low in sugar.. and the rest of the ingredients are keto friendly so I’m going with it.
Whats great is that this recipe doesn’t taste keto.. or even healthy. Which is how I like to do things. I hate things that taste healthy. 😂🤷♀️
The brown butter adds an awesome depth of flavor that I can’t get enough of! I make my own brown butter quickly in the pot but another option for DAIRY FREE would be to purchase and use Tinstar Brown Butter Ghee (which is delicious beyond what I can describe!) or of course you can always make ghee and brown it for this recipe. Whatever floats your boat!
6 large green apples peeled and chopped
1 Stick (8 tbsp) salted butter
1 Tbsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
Big Pinch of Salt
1/2-3/4 Cup Swerve (to taste- more for tart apples-less for sweet apples).
1 Tsp. Starch (Potato/arrowroot/tapioca or Corn Starch)
1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
1 cup blanched almond flour
1/2 cup swerve
1.5 Tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
4 Tbsp Melted Salted Butter
1/4 Tsp Salt
Preheat oven to 425. Peel andnd chop apples and set aside.
Add the butter to a large sauce pan and cook over low heat until it just starts to brown. Once it has reached this point, dump in the apples and stir them so they are coated with the butter. Add the Pumpkin Pie Spice, Salt, Swerve, Vanilla and Starch. Cook over medium low heat until the apples are tender. Pour them into a 7x7 (or similar sized) casserole dish. (Note: You want to cook the apples basically until the point that you want them when the apple crisp is done! They wont cook much more in the oven- that time is primarily to finish off the topping!)
Make the crumb topping by combining all the crumb ingredients with a fork until its in pea sized clumps. (Though don’t worry about this being precise!). Sprinkle it over the apples.
Bake 10-14 minutes until the apples are bubbling and the topping is golden brown! Keep a close eye on it though the last few minutes in the oven as the almond flour goes from cooked to burnt pretty fast!
